an update…

February 25, 2009 at 11:09 am (Uncategorized)

Hi friends!  Those of you who know me, know that I hate talking on the phone.   So here’s my lame attempt at letting you all know what’s going on…

Monday morning as I was getting the kids ready for school, I had really severe chest pain.  Dave had already left for work and I was really scared and didn’t know what to do.  I didn’t know what they’d do with the kids if I called an ambulance, and I really felt I couldn’t wait for anyone to come over to watch them.  So we got in the car as fast as possible and I drove to school.  I was in such pain – I just prayed all the way there that God would get us there safely.  The kids were very upset – they knew something was wrong – and I hadn’t packed their lunches or even gotten Ally dressed.  And to top it all off it was Lyndsay’s 8th birthday!!  So… as I drove in the parking lot, the principal and her husband, the pastor of the church, were walking into the school.  I pulled over and told them I needed help getting to the ER – they quickly got all the kids out, took them in – and Pastor drove me to the ER.

To make a long story short, the ER docs were concerned (as I was) that there was something wrong with my heart.  They gave me meds to take the pain away and it worked after a while (thank God).  They transferred me to Mercy Hospital.  At Mercy they did all sorts of tests.  Bottom line, there’s nothing wrong with my heart or lungs.  (again, thank God!)

So I’m home now.  I’m supposed to be resting for a couple of days, which I am.  I’m only doing the minimum and conserving energy for dropping off / picking up kids from school.

But I’m still concerned since we really don’t know what happened to me on Monday.  The hospital felt that they’d ruled out all the “acute” and “major” things that could have been wrong, but not knowing what it was makes me nervous.  What if it happens again??

So I’m following up with my primary care physician on Friday to pursue other causes.  Please pray that what I experienced Monday doesn’t happen again and that we can pinpoint a cause and treatment soon.  It was really traumatic for the kids, as you can imagine, so I’d really not like a repeat!

Thank you to all of you who have been praying, and especially those of you who picked up the slack when it came to mops!  I so appreciate the support that all of you give me!  I’ll update more when I learn anything new…

Two of My Valentines…

February 20, 2009 at 10:28 am (Mothering, Scripture, parenting) ()

Last Friday, my husband took our oldest to a father-daughter dance.  It was so sweet.  Just seeing the two of them dressed up and going out together, and then seeing the delight on her face when they got home was the best valentine present ever.

She will be turning 8 on Monday.  It’s so hard for me to believe that!  Where did the time go??  The mommy in me sees this picture and fast-forwards to the wedding pictures!  It just makes me want to treasure each and every day more and more because I know the days that she’s in our house are short-lived!

TTAH Tuesday – it’s what’s for lunch

February 18, 2009 at 1:05 pm (Good Stuff, Try-This-At-Home Tuesday) ()

greek pita pizza

greek pita pizza

I know it’s not Tuesday anymore.  Really I do.  But having the kids home from school this week… well, let’s just say I’m a little off.  I hope you’ll forgive me.

If you like greek stuff – feta cheese, kalamata olives, etc. – then try this pita pizza at home.  YUMMY!

Spread some sour cream on a pita, then sprinkle on top some red onion, kalamata olives, diced tomatoes, feta cheese, and mozzarella cheese.  Place it under the broiler for long enough to warm it up and melt the mozzarella.  Then get ready to enjoy.

**Just a note:  My kids won’t eat this.  But it’s a delicious treat for mommy every once in a while!!**

TTAH Tuesday – steppin’ out (or in)

February 10, 2009 at 12:48 pm (Fun for Kids, Good Stuff, Mothering, Try-This-At-Home Tuesday) (, )

OK, I’m going to seriously deviate from my usual tips that involve food, and instead give you a tip about exercising.  (Hey, it is Valentine’s Day this weekend… and we need a way to work off all the chocolate, right??)

If you want to exercise, but have a hard time fitting it in with all your other responsibilities, and the outrageous YMCA membership prices are too high, then this tip is for you.

I have found the perfect exercise video that your kids can actually do WITH you.

Someone gave me a Leslie Sansone “Walk at Home” DVD last year and I love it.  So do the kids.  The result?  I can get some exercise in, they can get some exercise, and I don’t have to worry about them beating each other up in the other room while I get a workout.  Bonus.

Here’s a link to the website:

http://www.walkathome.com/walk/

There are a whole bunch of DVDs available – at all different levels so if you’re a couch potato and walking to the mailbox gets you sweating there’s one for you.  And if you are used to exercising, but just need something indoors for these gray winter days, there’s more difficult ones for you.  I’ve seen them sold at all the local stores – WalMart, Target, and K-Mart.

Another tip – I just saw a bunch of the DVDs for $5 each in a sale bin at K-Mart this morning!  That’s a great deal!

Have a happy Tuesday!

the day has come

February 9, 2009 at 10:24 am (parenting) ()

Let me start off by explaining… I don’t like feet.  I don’t hate them, really, but I don’t relish the thought of looking at or being anywhere near someone else’s feet.

That is, with the exception of my children.  All of them have just had the sweetest little feet.  I could kiss them all day… toe fuzz and all.  My son had the sweatiest, stinkiest feet as a baby – but I still thought they were cute.

But all good things come to an end, don’t they?  I wondered when this day would come.  Now I know.

Being a good mom, I regularly clip my kids’ fingernails and toenails.  Last week I did my daughter’s feet – she’s 7 – and it grossed me out a little bit.  Her feet were clean (she had just gotten out of the shower), but for some reason I didn’t think they were cute and sweet anymore.

They were feet.

So now I know.  And for any of you who ever wondered when the “cute baby feet” syndrome wears off… now you know.  Age 7.

Enjoy your newfound knowledge.

TTAH Tuesday – Winter Picnic

February 4, 2009 at 10:20 am (Fun for Kids, Try-This-At-Home Tuesday) (, )

About this time of year in western NY, I begin to tire of the snow.  We’ve had snow, snow, and more snow this winter.  And it keeps coming.

In order to brighten up a particularly drab week, last Friday we had a picnic dinner.  Inside, of course.  But I made hot dogs, macaroni salad, and deviled eggs.  We got out a table runner that reminds us of summer.  I was kind of amazed at how excited the kids got about our “winter picnic”.

It definitely brought thoughts of summer… even in the midst of a cold and snowy day outside.

So if you’ve had enough winter and want to spark things up a bit at your house, have a “winter picnic”.  Make whatever yummy picnic food your family likes, and enjoy.  Now that I think about it, you really could go all out – let your kids wear shorts & t-shirts, make lemonade, have ice cream cones, use paper plates – whatever gets everyone in a good mood!

Try it and let me know how it goes!
